AWeber is one of the oldest email marketing services in our review. It proposes all of the same points you would expect from any email marketing solution. It is a bit quieter than most when processing some data, though, and it can take you longer to achieve the same tasks that would be relatively quick with other, more up-to-date programs.
We had decent progress with the test emails we sent through AWeber, but there were still problems. Every test email we sent was delivered, but those emails were refused to the spam folders consistently. This web-based email marketing software allows you send unlimited emails, though, so you don’t have to trouble about extra tries costing you more money.
AWeber tracks the emails you transfer with it, so you can see which ones were successfully delivered and how several of your readers opened them. Like the best email marketing services, AWeber permits you set up autoresponders and triggered responses so that you can speedily greet new subscribers with a welcome email and program seasonal or birthday emails to your subscribers.
As much as automated email marketing services preserve you time, AWeber is a bit of a time-suck when you import your contacts or build email campaigns. The program slows down as you add contacts, whether you’re implying them from a file, copying, and pasting, or registering them individually. The lag isn’t atrocious, but it can be frustrating. Introducing an existing database into Aweber is a notable straightforward thing. You can upload the following file types:

As you imply your data, you are given the option to add your subscribers to a special set of autoresponders and tag them. Not all competing products allow the addition of imported data immediately into autoresponder cycles, so this is a nice option to have.

To be frank, I don’t love all of the designs – some of them seem slightly dated. I would suppose them to be a bit better than the Getresponse offering, but not as great as Mailchimp’s. Though, the sheer volume of templates available means that with a little bit of tweaking you should be ready to find a suitable one for your email newsletters. There is, of course, always the possibility of coding your own too. So in general, I’d give Aweber a thumbs up in the template section.
Autoresponder Follow Up
Autoresponders – a range of follow up emails that are automatically launched by either time or user operations – are a key part of any e-marketing solution.
Aweber claims to have developed autoresponders back in 1998, and as such, you’d expect their autoresponder functionality to be mind-blowingly good. Oddly, it’s just ‘okay.’
On the plus side it is very simple to set up follow up emails meant on time period – i.e., automatically sending subscribers an onboarding email instantly after sign up, a promo code two days later and a ‘follow us on social media’ email a week later is remarkably easy. This is a typical utility of autoresponders, and it’s a breeze with Aweber.
On the downside, triggering autoresponders meant on user actions and purchases is a bit more complex than with key competitors Mailchimp and Getresponse. Utilizing Aweber, you can create ‘goals’ or fuse automation rules with tagging to make autoresponders behave in quite funky ways…but it’s easier to make use of autoresponders in advanced techniques using other products, particularly Getresponse.
That said, Aweber is working on a new point, ‘Campaigns,’ to provide easier ways to work with autoresponders and trigger them based on user activities and events (see video below).
Ultimately I’d give Aweber a ‘could do better’ report when it comes to autoresponders – but to be fair, they are trying to, and I don’t think it’ll be long before we see some improvements in this area.
responsive email designs
Contrary some other email marketing tools – notably, Mad Mimi – all Aweber’s email templates are ‘responsive.’ This signifies that they automatically resize themselves to readjust the device they’re being viewed on. In this day and age of smartphones and tablets, this is a good point. One minor gripe I have however concerning the responsive designs is that to preview them you’ll have to send a test email to a smartphone. On other platforms, you can usually simply hit a ‘preview on phone’ button or similar.
Split testing (also identified as A/B testing) involves sending variants of your e-newsletters to some of your mailing lists, monitoring the completion of each, and sending the ‘best’ version to the rest of your list. Most e-marketing tools work this automatically for you: you create a few various versions of your email (using either differing content or subject headers), send them to a unit of your data, and your email marketing solution will roll out the best acting version automatically to the rest of your mailing list.
Split testing’s lovely good in Aweber. You can create four modifications of an email. This compares positively with Mailchimp, Campaign Monitor and Mad Mimi – Mailchimp permits you to work with three variants; Campaign Monitor 2; and Mad Mimi doesn’t help split testing at all. Getresponse, but, provides better functionality in this department, allowing you to split test a more generous five variants.
Email analytics in Aweber are good. In addition to being ready to monitor key stats such as open rate, click-throughs, and bounces, you can also seem at a lot of other valuable analytics/information, comprising
- the increase of lists over time
- a summary of sign up methods
- where people are opening your email (i.e., geographical location)
- the archives of an individual’s action – you can view past opens and clicks, etc. at a per-subscriber level
and many else.
Regarding how this compares with competing products, I would state that Aweber’s reporting is more comprehensive than that which is possible in Campaign Monitor or Mad Mimi; but, I would argue that Mailchimp and Getresponse both give better reporting interfaces. With the latter two products, you look to be able to get more of an overview of information in one place, particularly when viewing at the performance of individual e-newsletters. With Aweber, you’ve got to flick between three sections – “Broadcasts”, “Subscribers” and “Reports” to get an overall picture of analytics, whereas Getresponse and Mailchimp present most of their reporting information on one dashboard (which you can do to drill down to specifics).
RSS / blog-to-email functionality
Like related e-marketing products, Aweber can use your site’s RSS feed and turn it into e-newsletters that become sent out according to a schedule that you determine. This is particularly beneficial for bloggers who want their mailing lists to automatically get an e-newsletter including their latest content after they publish a blog post.
It’s worth noting however that you can’t utilize the standard Aweber template designs for RSS-to-email plans – you have to pick from a set of templates which are expressly designed for this purpose. On the plus side, there are a few of these to pick from – more than most other e-marketing solutions I’ve tried; on the downside, any of them look pretty dreadful. And annoyingly, you can’t use the standard Aweber email drag and drop interface to update them. With a bit of tweaking, you should be ready to find something that works, but I believe there is some large room for improvement here.

Segmenting data in Aweber is very honest. You can create segments not only meant on the contents of any field in your database but also on user movement too – emails opened, web pages visited, links clicked, products bought and so on. It’s all very manageable and easy to use – a definite thumbs up here.
Aweber’s support is one of the stand-out specialties of the product. Phone support, email support, and live chat support are all available – this compares very positively with some key competitors comprising Mailchimp, Campaign Monitor, and Mad Mimi, who only offer email support. Additionally, there are no hoops to go through to contact support – related phone number and email details can be seen easily on the company’s contact page, without any necessary to trawl ‘knowledge bases’ or fill in any figures beforehand.
On top of that, the group recently won a Gold Award in the US’ National Customer Association’s Stevie Awards, which augurs great for the quality of the support you’ll get when you contact them. If you are a beginner to email marketing, then this sort of easy entrance to good-quality support is a strong argument for using Aweber as your email marketing provider.

- The autoresponder functionality is a little on the basic side – although that said, it seems as though the new ‘Campaigns’ functionality is soon set to replace that.
- The RSS to email templates look pretty awful and they can’t be regulated doing Aweber’s standard drag and drop email builder.
Overall I would rate Aweber as a solid performer – not necessarily the best e-marketing product, but one that is honestly priced, easy to use, and well maintained. The strongest arguments for using it are reasonable that its interface is user-friendly; its wide range of combinations with other tools; and that you can avail of support from Aweber simply.
The support features positions it as a good option for anyone starting out in e-marketing without a truckload of technical skills: you plausibly won’t get stuck, but if you do, you can talk to a real human being on a real phone line about your problem.
